Jérémie Niel worked on a wide range of artistic projects before founding his own company, Pétrus, in 2005. The first show he created with the company was La campagne (The Country), by British playwright Martin Crimp. Since then he has pursued a rigorous formal investigation into the spectator’s sensory responses. Some 15 years later, he remounted Crimp’s strange and disturbing play, which laid the foundations of his own aesthetic language.
“With La campagne, I discovered the fog that I love so much in my shows. I discovered doubt. I discovered the complexity of the unspoken. I discovered subdued lighting. I discovered introverted acting. I discovered everything, in fact, with this play.”
